"The purpose of Art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls" - Pablo Picasso

PREFERRED MEDIA:  Glass, metal, stone, concrete, clay, mixed media.

"I mostly work in molten glass that cools to have the translucency of being underwater, inspired by the delicate colorful detail of nature or metal and clay in textured forms like an ancient fossil or odd pattern of a stone that you have to look at closely because it is unusual.  My work involves a range of handcraft techniques in glass, metal and natural materials.  The inspiration behind my art involves me touching nature, sifting it and adjusting it into a slight abstract of what is, to adorn the human body or living environment, in unique combinations that enhance beauty and visual curiosity."

Cowan's artwork is in the collection of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts where she was the recipient of Hawaii SFCA's 1% for the Arts in Public Places sculpture award.  Cowan was the founder, president and executive director of Kauai Recycling for the Arts, a non-profit educational program producing recycled glass products and demonstrating closed loop glass recycling, designing and teaching art courses for Kid's summer art camp, and adult art and crafts programs in partnership with the County of Kauai's Resource Center. She also taught for Hawaii Boys and Girls Clubs and Big Brothers, Big Sisters programs through the Honolulu Academy of Arts and Kula School. She served 12 years on the board of directors for the Kauai Society of Artists and is currently serving on the board of directors for Hawaii Craftsmen.
